Shiraito Falls (Shiraito no Taki, “white-thread waterfall”) lies in the Sefuri hills on the southern edge of Itoshima, at an altitude of roughly 500 metres. The stream drops about 24 metres over a broad rock face, fanning out into fine white strands — hence the name — before running on through a wooded glen.
The falls are a designated scenic spot of Fukuoka Prefecture and a favourite summer escape: it is noticeably cooler up here than on the coast. A small visitor area beside the falls serves nagashi-somen — cold noodles you catch with chopsticks as they flow past in water — and rents rods for catching yamame trout, which are grilled for you on the spot. Hydrangeas line the stream from late June into July, and the maples turn in November.
Top things to do: Shiraito Falls
Stand at the foot of the falls
The waterfall is only a few steps from the car park, so this is one of the easiest natural sights in Itoshima. A path and small bridges let you view it from several angles; beside it stands a very old maple tree.
Catch your lunch: nagashi-somen and trout
In the warmer months the rest house runs somen noodles through flumes of cold mountain water — a simple, cheerful meal that children love — and you can fish for yamame trout in stocked pools. Both are seasonal, so check what is operating if you visit outside summer.
See the hydrangeas
From about late June to mid-July thousands of hydrangeas bloom around the falls, just as the rainy season fills the stream. It is the prettiest — and wettest — time to come.
Combine with Raizan Sennyoji
The falls and Raizan Sennyoji temple are on neighbouring hillsides and are paired on most day tours. With a car, allow half a day for the two.

How to get there
- By car: about 25–30 minutes from Chikuzen-Maebaru Station up a narrow, winding mountain road, or roughly an hour from central Fukuoka. On summer weekends and holidays the road queues and a parking fee may be charged; arrive early.
- By bus: the Itoshima community bus runs from Chikuzen-Maebaru Station towards Shiraito, but the nearest regular stop leaves a long, steep uphill walk to the falls. Check current routes — services are few.
- By tour: the simplest way without a car. Most Itoshima coach tours start here in the morning.
Insider tips
- Bring a light layer even in summer; the glen is shaded and several degrees cooler than the coast.
- The rocks around the falls are slippery. Wear shoes with grip.
- On August weekends the wait for both parking and noodles can be long — a weekday morning is far easier.
- In winter the road can be icy and the food stalls are largely closed.
