Where to Stay in Itoshima

Sleep by the sea for the sunset, or stay in the city and day-trip. Here is how to choose.

Most visitors see Itoshima as a day trip from Fukuoka, and that works well. But the coast is at its best at exactly the times day-trippers miss: at sunset, after dark when the stars come out over the sea, and early in the morning before the cafés fill. One night here changes the trip.

There are two sensible choices. On the Itoshima coast you will find small design hotels, guesthouses and a growing number of glamping sites — lovely, but spread out, usually car-dependent and limited in number, so book early for weekends and summer. In Fukuoka you get hundreds of hotels, restaurants on the doorstep and a direct train to Itoshima in 35–45 minutes.

We do not quote prices because they swing widely with season, weekday and events — every card links out to Trip.com for live rates and availability.

How to choose

  • The sunset is the point? Stay within walking distance of Futamigaura, so you are not driving unfamiliar roads in the dark.
  • No car? Choose Maebaru town or a place near a JR station on the Nijo coast — or stay in Fukuoka and take a day tour.
  • Family or group? Glamping units and whole-house rentals often work out well per person and come with barbecue facilities.
  • Short trip to Kyushu? Base yourself in Fukuoka near Hakata or Tenjin and give Itoshima a full day.

Booking tips

  • Coastal properties are small. Summer weekends, holidays and the weeks around the solstice sell out well ahead.
  • Check what dinner arrangements exist: many coastal cafés close by early evening, and some stays are room-only. Glamping often includes a barbecue set, sometimes at extra cost.
  • Ask about check-in times — small properties may have a short window or self check-in.
  • Glamping in winter is cold at the edges, however good the heater. In summer, expect insects.
  • In Fukuoka, rates jump on concert, festival and sumo-tournament dates; flexible travellers should check a few different nights.

Where to stay: FAQs

Is it better to stay in Itoshima or Fukuoka?

Fukuoka for convenience and choice; Itoshima for the sunset, quiet and the sea on your doorstep. Many travellers spend one night on the coast and the rest in the city.

Are there hotels near the married rocks?

Yes, a small number of hotels and guesthouses sit within walking distance of Futamigaura beach. They are popular and limited, so book ahead.

Can I stay in Itoshima without a car?

Yes, if you choose carefully: Maebaru town near the main station, or accommodation close to a JR Chikuhi Line station on the Nijo coast. The Sunset Road side is difficult without a car or bicycle.

What is glamping in Itoshima like?

Typically furnished tents, domes or cabins with proper beds, air conditioning and a private or shared barbecue area, often with a sea view. Facilities vary widely, so read the listing closely.

How far ahead should I book?

For summer weekends, public holidays and late June, a month or more ahead on the coast. Fukuoka usually has availability at shorter notice except on major event dates.
