Why visit Itoshima?

A slow, sea-facing peninsula on the edge of a big city

Itoshima is the green peninsula and plain immediately west of Fukuoka, facing the open Genkai Sea. Direct trains from Hakata, Tenjin and the airport reach its main station, Chikuzen-Maebaru, in 35 to 45 minutes — and then the city simply stops: rice fields, fishing ports, white beaches and wooded hills take over.

People come for the sunset at the married rocks of Sakurai Futamigaura, for the cafés and photo spots of the Sunset Road, for the Keya no Oto sea cave, and in winter for oysters grilled at the harbour. The catch is that these places are spread out and buses are few. This guide tells you plainly what can be done by train and bus, when a rental car or e-bike is worth it, and which guided tours from Fukuoka solve the problem for you.

What to see

Married rocks, sea caves, waterfalls and oyster huts

Itoshima’s sights fall into three groups: the sunset coast, the hills behind it, and the food and history of the plain in between. These are the places worth building a day around.

The married rocks and white torii of Sakurai Futamigaura seen from above the coast road The sunset coast

Sakurai Futamigaura

The married rocks and the white torii

Two rocks tied together by a huge sacred rope stand about 150 metres offshore, framed by a white torii gate on the beach. It is the picture of Itoshima — at its best at sunset, and above all around the summer solstice, when the sun sets between the rocks.

A palm tree and seaside path beside the coast road near Futamigaura, Itoshima The sunset coast

Sunset Road & Beach Cafés

The coast road of cafés, swings and photo spots

The Sunset Road follows the north-west coast of the peninsula past beaches, surf breaks and a string of sea-view cafés — Palm Beach, the London Bus Café, Zauo and its palm-tree swing. It is the Itoshima of social media, and it is best driven or cycled slowly.

The basalt columns inside the Keya no Oto sea cave seen from the bow of a sightseeing boat The sunset coast

Keya no Oto Sea Cave

A basalt cathedral you enter by boat

At the western tip of the peninsula a 64-metre cliff of hexagonal basalt columns rises from the Genkai Sea, pierced by a deep cave. Small sightseeing boats from Keya fishing port nose right into it when the sea allows; a short forest trail leads to a viewpoint above.

A long white beach on the Nogita coast of Itoshima seen from the hills The sunset coast

Beaches & Surfing

White sand, surf breaks and singing sand

Itoshima’s north coast faces the open Genkai Sea: long white beaches, clear water and Fukuoka’s most reliable surf. Nogita is the surfers’ beach, Keya the classic swimming beach, and Anego-no-hama is famous for sand that squeaks under your feet.

Shiraito Falls spreading in white threads over a rock face in the forest above Itoshima Hills, falls & temples

Shiraito Falls

A cool waterfall in the hills, with noodles

High in the hills behind the town, Shiraito Falls drops about 24 metres over a rock face into a shady glen. In summer families come to catch nagashi-somen noodles from bamboo flumes and fish for trout; in early summer the path is lined with hydrangeas.

The great maple tree of Raizan Sennyoji temple spreading over the temple courtyard Hills, falls & temples

Raizan Sennyoji Temple

The great maple and a towering Kannon

Raizan Sennyoji Daihioin sits on the slope of Mount Raizan. Its treasures are a giant maple some 400 years old that blazes red in November, a wooden Thousand-armed Kannon nearly five metres tall, and a hillside of small stone disciples.

Good to know

Visiting Itoshima: your questions answered

Is Itoshima worth visiting?

Yes, if you like coast, food and a slower pace. It is the easiest escape from Fukuoka: white beaches, the married rocks at sunset, cafés, a sea cave, a waterfall and, in winter, oyster huts. It is not a place of grand monuments, and it rewards a full day more than a quick stop. You can compare the best tours here.

How do I get to Itoshima from Fukuoka?

Take the subway Airport Line, which runs through onto the JR Chikuhi Line. Direct trains reach Chikuzen-Maebaru in about 35 minutes from Tenjin, 40 from Hakata and 45 from Fukuoka Airport. From there you need a bus, bicycle, taxi or car to reach the coast. See our full getting to Itoshima guide.

Do I need a car in Itoshima?

Not strictly, but it helps a great deal. The sights are scattered and buses are infrequent. Without a car, choose one area — Futamigaura by bus, or an oyster hut near a station — or join a guided day tour. With a car or e-bike you can link the hills and the coast in one day.

How much time do I need?

Half a day is enough for Futamigaura and a café, or for an oyster-hut lunch. A full day lets you add Shiraito Falls, Raizan Sennyoji temple and the Sunset Road. Stay a night if you want the sunset without watching the clock.

When is the best time to visit Itoshima?

Late spring and autumn have the most comfortable weather. Mid-June to early July brings the sunset between the married rocks; July and August are for swimming; mid-November for the maple at Sennyoji; and late October to March for oysters. See when to visit.
