Fukuoka City

The gateway: yatai, Dazaifu and island flowers

Fukuoka is where an Itoshima trip begins and, for most visitors, where it ends each evening. Kyushu’s largest city has an airport ten minutes from the centre by subway, a Shinkansen terminal at Hakata, and the direct trains that reach Itoshima in 30 to 45 minutes.

It is also one of Japan’s great eating cities, and it has day trips of its own. If Itoshima is your beach day, these are the things to pair it with.

Top things to do: Fukuoka City

Eat at the yatai

Each evening, open-air food stalls — yatai — set up along the river in Nakasu and on the streets of Tenjin, seating eight or ten people shoulder to shoulder for ramen, skewers and oden. Go early, expect to share the bench, and order something at each stall you sit at. A guided food tour is a gentle introduction.

Visit Dazaifu

About 30–40 minutes south-east of the city by train, Dazaifu Tenmangu is the head shrine of the deity of learning, approached by a street of rice-cake shops. The Kyushu National Museum is next door.

Stop at Nokonoshima on the way

The ferry to the island of Nokonoshima leaves from a terminal near Meinohama, on the same railway line as Itoshima, and takes about ten minutes. The island’s flower park is known for rapeseed in early spring and cosmos in autumn.

See the city from Fukuoka Tower

The 234-metre tower on the Momochi seafront has an observation deck looking along the bay towards the Itoshima peninsula. Several Itoshima coach tours finish here.

How to get there

  • To Itoshima: the subway Airport (Kuko) Line runs through onto the JR Chikuhi Line. Direct trains reach Chikuzen-Maebaru in about 35 minutes from Tenjin, 40 from Hakata and 45 from Fukuoka Airport. Details in getting to Itoshima.
  • To Dazaifu: Nishitetsu trains from Tenjin (change at Futsukaichi) or direct buses from Hakata Bus Terminal.
  • To Nokonoshima: bus or a walk from Meinohama Station to the ferry terminal, then the ferry.

Insider tips

  • Stay near Tenjin or Hakata for the simplest Itoshima day trip — both are on the direct line. See where to stay.
  • Yatai close in bad weather and many take a day off each week.
  • Hotel prices in Fukuoka jump on concert and event weekends; book early for those dates.

How far is Itoshima from Fukuoka?

Fukuoka for choice, nightlife and easy transport; Itoshima for a beach sunset, quiet and a car-based stay. Many visitors do one night by the sea and the rest in the city.
